Hi, your blog on surgery came up when I was searching about jaw expansion surgery. My orthodontist tells me I must have thi, mandible only, to overcome malocclusion and obstruction. Like you, I inherited my father’s teeth and jaws. Very late in life we found that my father had severe sleep apnea, from which he had suffered for years. SAdly he couldn’t benefit from CPAP etc. and had suffered mini strokes and high blood pressure that led to so much mental damage (from being a head of NASA to being unable to do any math at all). I think a lot of what are called “age” symptoms might be attributed to lack of good sleep. Your blog was so informative and honest and very interesting. Congratulations on the success of your surgery and good luck on exercise and new sleep habits! Then I checked your website and see you have three sons in the service, and are exceedingly concerned about the direction of our nation. I hope deeply for your three sons to return home safely, and for our nation to end its imperialistic path. I jotted down some of your books to read and will share with my book club. Andy Barnett, I think you do honor to LIBRARIANS, many of whom have provided much of the richness in my life. Thanks. Kay in San Diego

Dear Andy, I am writing this in a semi-fog after another fitful night of CPAP. I’ve read your experience with MMA and was wondering how you are doing? Do you have any adverse lingering effects such as numbness, maladjusted teeth alignment, or anything else? I am considering this procedure and any advice would be appreciated. I’ve been on CPAP for about 18 months with no real improvement. I sorry if this seems disjointed but I’m still half-asleep. Thanks so much,
    Ralph

    Andy,

Allow me to add thanks for your thorough chronicling of your MMA surgery. I don’t know if you realize how many OSA sufferers you are helping. As I consider the same surgery I wonder if you would recommend it now that you are a few years post-op? Has it changed your sleep noticeably? Do you have any regrets? Would you do anything different? Have you had to, or do you expect to have to return to CPAP therapy over time?

Can you share the amount of forward advancement was made to our lower jaw? It’s virtually unnoticeable on the before and after. One of my concerns is I will be left with a protruding monkey face. That obviously did not happen to you.

I am trying to get my procedure done at the same time you did – last two weeks of December. Any advice you have will be whole heartedly considered. Thanks

    Scott

    Dear Andy,
I also want to thank you for your mma reporting and am interested in how you’re doing now. Can I see the replies you gave to the other readers asking questions?
I am so scared to have this surgery and want to become as informed as possible beforehand. Thanks so much. Winona

    Andy,
I just read your blog on MMA. I had MMA surgery for OSA in 1995. It was good to hear about another person’s experience. I hope you are continuing to sleep well.

    Debra
